Comfort shows sit next to the heavy ones. I am ranking what I actually put on again, not what I admire from a distance.

1. The Office (UK) TV series · 2001

The UK original is perfectly sad and perfectly short.

2. Seinfeld TV series · 1989

Every episode is a perfect little machine.

3. Fawlty Towers TV series · 1975

Twelve episodes, all of them excellent.

4. The Sopranos TV series · 1999
5. The Wire TV series · 2002

Needs the second watch to catch everything.

6. Breaking Bad TV series · 2008

Walter's fall works even better when you know the end.

7. Succession TV series · 2018

Shiv, Roman and Kendall: all three are hard to like.

8. Chernobyl TV series · 2019
9. Mad Men TV series · 2007
10. Band of Brothers TV series · 2001
11. Fleabag TV series · 2016

The second season makes the first one hurt more.

12. Dark TV series · 2017
13. Friends TV series · 1994
14. Arrested Development TV series · 2003
15. The Simpsons TV series · 1989

Sunday nights with the volume turned up.
